Federal Safety Commissioner (FSC) accreditation has a reputation for being difficult, especially for small businesses.

Why FSC accreditation matters and FAQs

Does FSC Accreditation add value?

FSC accreditation is required for construction companies aiming to secure federally funded contracts over $4 million.

FEFO Consulting has helped several businesses gain and retain FSC accreditation across many sectors including demolition, renewable energy, builder and infrastructure. In each case, our approach was tailored to meet the needs of the organisation. Here are a few lessons learnt.

1. FSC Audit for a demolition company

Accreditation achieved with only one audit attempt!

A small demolition company partnered with us to redesign, develop, and implement its integrated system. FSC audit criteria, and how Federal Safety Officer auditors interpret them, are often highly prescriptive, so understanding expectations and applying them effectively to the business is critical.

We deployed a diverse expert team and used our proven FSC methodology, keeping processes simple and practical enough to meet business, legal and FSC requirements together.

The client’s Project Manager and graduate WHS Advisor brought amazing commitment to the work. The result was accreditation after the initial audit, which opens the way to bid for a large federally funded construction project. Read the full story.

2. FSC Accreditation for a renewable energy company

A renewable energy company specialising in EPC solutions for high-voltage and renewable energy projects came to us needing FSC accreditation. The company had to align its systems with strict FSC requirements across every level of the organisation and every project stage.

We brought in an expert team and again focused on simplicity. The Office of the Federal Safety Commissioner (OFSC) granted accreditation, which let the company bid for Commonwealth-funded construction projects valued over $4 million and secure an existing project for an immediate return on investment. 3. FSC Accreditation for a small construction company

A small construction company with limited resources and revenue under $2 million a year. We designed, developed, and supported the implementation of a new HSE management system. This system was built to be simple while meeting both FSC requirements and Baseline’s own needs.

This builder achieved accreditation, allowing it to bid for Commonwealth-funded construction work above $4 million. It also gave the company a strong health and safety foundation and a better commercial position to win work. Read the full story.

The takeaway

Across all three projects, our approach was different and also focused on a few core principles:

  1. keep the management system simple
  2. build system around the business to support operations; and
  3. bring in a team that already knows how FSC requirements are interpreted.
