WHY

Why Effective Leadership Matters?

Many organisation struggle with the key ingredient to effective health and safety….leadership.

Research demonstrates that effective leadership drives innovation, engagement, and sustainable growth, enabling your organisation to achieve its goals. Typical barriers include competing priorities, lack of visible commitment, limited health & safety awareness, fragmented communication or feedback loops. This can lead to a culture of fear, limited accountability and suboptimal performance.

Overcoming these barriers requires mindful leadership—leaders who are present, intentional, and committed to building trust and engagement.  At FEFO Consulting, we’ve partnered with academic researchers from the University of Sydney to create research-informed leadership development solutions. Our programs are designed to enhance organisational performance by building individual, team, and leadership capabilities at all levels.

How is Effective Leadership Achieved?

FAQs

1. What is safety leadership?

Safety leadership refers to how leaders influence and drive a culture where health and safety is prioritised in everyday decisions and behaviours. It goes beyond compliance, focusing on visible commitment, role modelling, and accountability at all levels of the organisation.

2. Why is safety leadership important?

Strong safety leadership is one of the biggest predictors of positive safety outcomes. Leaders set the tone – when safety is consistently prioritised by management, workers are more likely to follow safe practices, report hazards, and engage in risk management.

3. How is safety leadership different from safety management?

Safety management focuses on systems, policies, and procedures.
Safety leadership, on the other hand, is about behaviours — how leaders:

  • Communicate expectations
  • Make decisions under pressure
  • Respond to incidents
  • Engage with workers

Both are essential, but leadership is what brings systems to life.

4. How can safety leadership be measured?

Safety leadership can be assessed using both qualitative and quantitative indicators, such as:

  • Worker perception surveys (e.g. trust, communication, support)
  • Leadership visibility (e.g. site walks, engagement)
  • Quality of safety conversations
  • Response to incidents and near misses
  • Alignment between stated values and actual decisions

Frameworks aligned with ISO 45001 often include leadership evaluation components.

5. How can leaders improve their safety leadership?

Leaders can strengthen their impact by:

  • Being visibly present and engaged in safety activities
  • Encouraging open communication and psychological safety
  • Making safety a priority in decision-making—not just productivity
  • Learning from incidents rather than assigning blame
  • Seeking regular feedback from workers

Ongoing development, coaching, and reflection are key to embedding strong leadership behaviours.
